Location
Aird Cottage is situated in the north end of Trotternish, Skye's most northerly peninsula and is some 23 miles from the island's capital Portree, and approximately 2½ hours drive from the Highlands capital, Inverness (approx 135 miles). The journey from either Inverness or Fort William (approx 130 miles) takes you through some of Scotland's most spectacular scenery hopefully making for a memorable drive.
Directions
From Fort William to the Skye Bridge
From Fort William the A82 passes through Spean Bridge and alongside Loch Lochy to Invergarry. At Invergarry turn left onto the A87 and continue your journey to Kyle of Lochalsh (Skye Bridge) passing through Glen Shiel, Shiel Bridge, Dornie and Balmacara. This route will also take you past the impressive Eilean Donan Castle.
From Inverness to the Skye Bridge
Leave Inverness on the A82 to Drumnadrochit and continue onto Invermoriston where you then turn right onto the A887. After only a few miles the road meets up with and becomes the A87 leading directly to Sheil Bridge as above.
Alternative route from Inverness
Leave Inverness to the A9 crossing the Kessock Bridge and continue to the Tore roundabout where you take the 2nd exit onto the A835 (Ullapool) route. Just through Garve turn left onto the A832 and continue to Achnasheen where you then turn left at the roundabout onto the A890 and continue for approximately 18 miles where a left turn is required (Kyle of Lochalsh) to remain on the A890. Your journey will then take you alongside Loch Carron until you meet the A87, turning right to Kyle of Lochalsh (Skye Bridge).
From the Skye Bridge
Follow the A87 across the Skye Bridge, turn right at the roundabout and continue on the A87 where the route will take you through Broadford and onto Portree. Here, you can take the A87 route to the port of Uig, follow the signs from Uig to Staffin (a right turn before reaching the Ferry terminal) and continue through Kilvaxter, Hungladder, Duntulm Castle and when passing Kilmaluag look for the Aird/An Aird signpost where you turn left and continue for less than a mile where you will see Aird cottage on your right.
Alternatively, you may take the A855 from Portree via Staffin, continue past Flodigarry and when passing Balmaqueen look for the Aird/An Aird signpost and turn to your right. The Staffin route will take you past the Old Man of Storr, Lealt and Kilt Rock Falls.
